“Energy Networks Australia (ENA) has long argued that gas networks will play a critical role in Australia’s future energy mix.

 

The AEMC’s draft determination acknowledges the complexity of the transition and the reality that many households and businesses are expected to continue relying on gas from networks for years to come.

 

The draft package reflects a principle ENA has consistently supported: an orderly, well-planned transition delivers better outcomes for customers than a disorderly one.

 

While views will differ on the best way forward, it is important to recognise the trade-offs involved.

 

The AEMC has highlighted the risks of unmanaged network decline, including higher costs and challenges in maintaining safe and reliable services for those who continue to depend on gas.

 

The proposed 20-year outlook and stronger requirements around future planning and expenditure are designed to improve transparency and support better long-term decision-making for consumers, governments and industry alike.

 

That said, this is a draft determination and there is still significant detail to work through, including carefully considering the workability of proposed arrangements to remove capital based on uncertain forecasts rather than demonstrated changes in network use.

 

ENA and its members will engage closely with the consultation process, including on the proposed cost recovery and regulatory settings, and will provide a detailed submission ahead of the 8 October deadline.”
