ENA welcomes Government re-election, calls for continued focus on energy transition

Energy Networks Australia (ENA) congratulates Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and the re-elected Labor Government, and looks forward to continued collaboration with The Hon Chris Bowen in his second term as Minister for Climate Change and Energy.

ENA Chief Executive Dominique van den Berg expressed optimism about the continued focus on Australia’s energy transition.

“We congratulate the Albanese Government on its re-election and look forward to continuing our work to deliver a reliable, affordable, and sustainable energy future for all Australians,” she said. “Minister Bowen’s continued leadership is crucial as we navigate this critical period of transformation.”

Ms van den Berg highlighted ENA’s recent ‘Powering our Future’ paper, which outlined six key policy recommendations for a stronger energy system.

“We are eager to work alongside the Government to implement these six crucial policies. These recommendations, which address issues such as fair compensation for landholders hosting transmission infrastructure and accelerating the rollout of electric vehicle charging, align strongly with the focus of our network members, and the overall need to accelerate the energy transition.”

ENA’s ‘Powering our Future’ document emphasises the following key policy areas:

  • Power the transition through transmission: Securing the future of the Rewiring the Nation fund.
  • Give landholders a fair deal at tax time: Exempting landholder compensation payments from Capital Gains Tax (CGT).
  • Get street smart: Accelerating electric vehicle charging accessibility.
  • Soak up surplus solar and lower costs: Introducing waivers for grid-connected battery rollouts.
  • Secure the critical role of gas: Modernising market frameworks for gas peaking and long-duration storage.
  • Make renewable gas for industry a reality: Introducing a national renewable gas target.

“We are also committed to providing ongoing support with the established Parliamentary Friends of the Energy Transition to collaborate on strong and supportive policy measures that are essential to achieving the transition for Australia,” said van den Berg.
