Bushfire Impacts on Electricity Networks
Energy Networks Australia has released a factsheet outlining how bushfires impact electricity networks and what networks do to prepare.
“This fire season has been particularly devastating and Energy Networks Australia conveys its deep sympathy and concern for all those impacted,” Energy Networks Australia Chief Executive Officer, Andrew Dillon, said.
“Bushfires can have a direct and indirect impact on electricity networks.
“Fire can damage power poles and other equipment and heat and smoke from fires can cause overheating at substations.
“The recent fires have destroyed more than 5,000 power poles across Victoria and NSW and entire sections of electricity networks are being rebuilt from the ground up.”
Mr Dillon said power had been restored to most customers in the fire-affected regions; however, some customers in inaccessible or unsafe areas remained off supply. Generators had also been provided to help get the lights back on for some remote customers.
“Networks are continually working on fire prevention measures including installing new technologies, removing or pruning high-risk trees and inspecting equipment,” he said.
“Networks’ first priority is safety for our workers and our customers.”
Energy Networks Australia and the Australian Energy Council have previously outlined the support being offered by generators, networks and retailers for bushfire affected customers.
